Peacocks - Birds - History

Peacock-birds have a peculiar history embroidered with beautiful legends and myths. In some societies, they have been worshiped and adored; in other societies they have been considered evil birds.

The Phoenicians could be the first to have brought peafowl to Egypt. Greek mythology used the image of this magnificent bird as well. The peacock belonged to Hera, queen of the Gods. Peafowl were exported all over the world in Biblical times and were regarded as one of the most wonderful treasures. King Solomon is believed to have brought peacocks to Israel.

Served with their own feathers and cooked in many various ways, peacocks were the specialty and the perfect decoration element of the table in the ancient Roman civilization.

Peafowl were wide spread in Europe in the 14th century. Naturally, these birds were the ownership of the rich and noble of that time.

Peacocks are sacred by certain Indian groups nowadays as well. The peafowl was declared the official national bird of India in 1963. Law in its native habitat protects the peacock-bird. However, some societies are known to associate the spots on the peafowl's feathers with evil eyes and they do not keep them inside their homes out of fear.

Peacocks - Birds - Diet

Peafowl feeds on insects, worms, seeds, and fruit. They also can eat mice and snakes. In India, where the peafowl is still found wild in the jungles, the peafowl is considered very useful because it can feed on cobras. Peacock-birds are unique in the world of birds.
